Mr. Jackson - Headmaster

"Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight." - Proverbs 3:5-6

Steve Jackson has been headmaster at Christ Methodist Day School since July 2002, and says he’s grateful to be able to, for the first time in his career, merge his spiritual life with his professional life.  After earning his bachelors in history and biology from Olivet College and masters in education from the University of Virginia, Steve began his teaching career in Charlottesville, Virginia, where he spent six years teaching second, fourth and fifth grades.

In 1989, he accepted the position of assistant principal at Spotswood Elementary in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Four years later, he became one of the youngest principals in the Commonwealth of Virginia when he was promoted to Head of School, a position he held for nine years. During that time, Steve also taught night classes in the Adult Degree Completion Program at Eastern Mennonite University and says that he enjoyed the challenge of teaching statistics to adult learners. Unable to stay away from the classroom for long, Steve has designed the curriculum for, is now teaching, a geography course that serves as a supplement to the sixth grade social studies curriculum here at CMDS.

During his career, Steve has served on several professional committees, including the K-12 Task Force on the Teaching Profession in Virginia, State Superintendent's Investigative Board, and Virginia Milken Educators Network. He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, the Virginia Association of Elementary Principals, and the National Association of Elementary Principals. He has also been involved in community work. In Harrisonburg, he served as a deacon at his church, volunteer for the United Way, and both commissioner and treasurer for the Office on Children and Youth. Steve also coached baseball for the local Little League Association.

Since moving to Memphis, he has continued his work with United Way and become actively involved at Woodland United Presbyterian Church, where he serves as an elder. Steve and Amy, his wife of twenty-five years, have two grown children. Their son Tucker, a recent UT-Knoxville graduate, is an aspiring coach and secondary education teacher. Madelyn is in her junior year at UTK, studying psychology.
