

Ms. Barbara Whitmire - Second Grade

In 1968 Barbara moved to Memphis after being born and raised in Jasper, Alabama. She earned a bachelor of science degree in medical technology and elementary education from Lambuth College. Before moving to Memphis Barbara interned as a Medical Technologist at Jackson General Hospital in Jackson, Tennessee. She also worked in the Hematology Lab at Chatham County General Hospital in Savannah, Georgia, during one summer.
Barbara taught school in Savannah, Georgia, and in the Memphis City School system before joining the faculty at Christ Methodist Day School in 1977. Her son graduated from Christ Methodist in 1983 and Barbara continued on to be a beloved second grade teacher.
Art is her passion and she enjoys going to art galleries, reading, and going to movies. Barbara also spends time teaching drawing and oil painting classes in the summer and doing commissioned paintings.

Book Report Schedule
All book report projects must be accompanied with a 2-minute oral presentation.
September : 22nd (Thurs./even) 23rd (Friday/odd) Written form will be sent home.
November: 10th (Thurs./odd) 11th (Friday/even) Shoebox diorama. Students will decorate a shoebox, turned on its side, to illustrate a scene from their book. They may use paint, twigs, clay, wallpaper, glitter, or any materials they wish. Practice, practice your presentation.
January: 26th (Thurs./even) 27th (Friday/odd) Book-in-a-Bag- Students will place 5 pictures or objects in a bag to pull out as they tell their story in sequence. (Two-minute summary)
March: 1st (Thurs./odd) 2nd (Friday/even) Costume Book Report--Students will read a biography of a person no longer living. It must not be a sports hero this book report. They will wear a costume to represent that famous person.

No lists to go home, no homework sentences, and no tests, as we have completed the book.
Reading
Students will read the leveled book Living Fossils and Lions at Last. We will focus on comprehension, main events, and details in these two stories.
Grammar
Synonyms and antonyms, last writing sample for the 2nd grade portfolio
Cursive Writing
Our next letters will be the incredible letters, remaining lower case letters!!!!
Math
*Identifying parallel lines and line segmentsts
*Adding three digit numbers and money amounts
*Multiplying by 5
*Multiplication number sentences
*Measuring weight using customary Units
Science
This semester students will study science. We will spend many weeks delving into space. Students will begin their "U.F.O's" stating facts they read about on "laser beams" shooting out from their space ship. We will read about planets, constellations, stars, meteors, and even black holes!!
