CMDS Wins American History Essay Contest Five Years Straight

03/14/2011

For the fifth straight year, a Christ MethodisDay School student has received the chapter award in the Daughters of the American Revolution essay contest. In “Memoirs of Paul Revere,” fifth grader, Wesley Carr, described several of the patriot’s acts of rebellion against the British, including: publishing a picture of the Boston Massacre; joining the Sons of Liberty in the Boston Tea Party; being the first to print Continental currency; and, of course, that infamous midnight ride.
The contest assignment was to “relate various accomplishments for which you wish to be remembered in the annals of American history,” from the point of view of Paul Revere.  Entries were judged on completeness of title, historical accuracy, adherence to subject, organization of material, originality, interest, spelling and punctuation, grammar, and the inclusion of a bibliography.  Wesley’s essay is now being judged at the state level.
Julie Reynolds, who has taught language arts to all five winners, says her students are always motivated and eager to take on the challenge of the contest. “The DAR consistently challenges them with topics they find very interesting and that makes my job of teaching the format easy,” Reynolds said modestly. “The extra effort is worth it to them and those who enter the contest are always excited for and congratulatory to the winner.”
