Another CMDS Student Wins Writing Contest

02/06/2012

Congratulations to fifth grader Ainsley Holliday, district winner of the 2011-12 Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) essay contest. Her essay, “Johnnie, My Brother, My Hero,” is the story of a young American soldier who risked his life to save three comrades wounded in the Battle of New Orleans (War of 1812) as told by his little sister. “I can tell she put a lot of effort and thought into her essay,” said Julie Reynolds, Ainsley’s language arts teacher. “She definitely deserves this honor.” This is the sixth straight year one of Mrs. Reynolds’ students has earned the award. So far, three have gone on to win at the state level.

Entries are judged on originality, interest, historical accuracy, adherence to subject, organization of material, spelling and punctuation, grammar, completeness of title page, and the inclusion of a bibliography. Ainsley will learn how her essay did in the state competition when the 2011-12 winners are announced in April.
