CMDS Crowns First-Ever Dual Geography, Spelling Bee Champ

CMDS 6th Grader Alexandra S. achieved a notable accomplishment this month: She won first place in both the Spelling Bee and Geography Bee. She was the first CMDS student to win both events!

We recently asked her to share some of her study skills, as well as some fun facts about herself.

Q: What has boosted your ability to be an accomplished speller?

A: Reading has definitely boosted my spelling ability. Looking up words that I don’t know the definitions to helps, too.

Q: What has helped you in your study of geography?

A: I have a smart globe that tells all about the different countries around the world. Also, I love to study atlases and learn about different cultures and languages around the world.

Q: You started at CMDS as a little girl in PK. Are you looking forward to graduation?

A: I am not looking forward to it because CMDS has taught me everything I know. It is family to me.

Q: What are your fondest CMDS memories?

A: Almost all of my CMDS memories are my fondest because I enjoy every second of the time I get to learn and be at school.

Q: What would you recommend younger students focus on to develop their spelling and geography abilities?

A: Reading recreationally, I think, helps with about every subject in school, partially because of the fact you can read about basically anything. Studying vocabulary and spelling rules definitely helps with spelling. What I think helps the most for geography is to study maps, globes and to learn about another culture or language.

Just for Fun

Q: What is your favorite subject in school?

A: I love every subject so much, and I cannot choose a favorite.

Q: Do you have a favorite book or series?

A: I love all the books I’ve read so much, and reading is my favorite recreational activity. I cannot choose just one favorite, but some books I have thoroughly enjoyed are “The Lord of the Rings,” “The Hobbit,” the whole “Harry Potter” series, the “Percy Jackson” books, “The Count of Monte Cristo,” and many more.

Q: Of all the things you are learning, what do you think will be the most useful when you’re an adult?

A: I think that when I learned to manage a checking account, manage debit cards, write checks, and other financial skills at BizTown, that will help me the most in later life.

Q: If you could be a sound, what would it be?

A: If I could be a sound, I would be some classical music because I enjoy listening to it. It is my favorite musical genre.

Q: What are some of your favorite activities outside of school?

A: I love recreational reading, crocheting, making Rainbow Loom creations, learning German and Spanish, and doing any kind of puzzles or solving riddles. I am also a figure skater at the Mid-South Ice House.
