Students in grades four and five experience many opportunities to become more independent and responsible for their own learning. Christ Methodist provides transitions during these years to prepare the boys and girls for middle school. In fourth grade, students have a departmentalized learning environment in which one teacher specializes in literature and language arts and her partner, in math, science, and social studies. In fifth grade, students rotate through a block schedule with four teachers. Each teacher specializes in one field of study: language arts, science/social studies, math, or literature.
In addition to their core subjects, students rotate through Encore classes, which are taught by specialized teachers in the areas of art, Bible, computer, E Lab, leadership, library, math lab, music, physical education, Spanish, and science lab. Several out-of-town field trips are included in the upper school curriculum, as well.
Each grade level at CMDS has its own set of unique traditions and learning experiences. Fourth graders look forward to displaying their impressive research projects, as well as performing for their families and fellow students, at the annual “State Fair,” a perfect finale to their year-long study of the five regions of the United States. Fifth graders connect the dots between what they have been learning in class and the real world, through role-playing during their day-long visit to BizTown!, a fully-interactive simulated town facility. Students always have fond memories of these events.
The culmination of the CMDS experience, sixth grade is packed with special traditions and academic highlights. Each fall, the group takes an overnight trip, which really creates a tight bond between the students. Other highlights include being the stars of the annual Christmas Musical and being honored and celebrated at the annual Sixth Grade Roast, an entertaining Oscar-themed show hosted each year by the fifth grade class.

Dissecting frogs in the science lab, playing the Stock Market Game, and exploring computer science with Ms. Moon are just a few of the exciting classroom activities our sixth graders experience. The 1:1 Chromebook program further enhances their learning and their independence. By the time Graduation arrives in May, our sixth graders are well prepared for what lies ahead.
