Fourth - Fifth Grades
Students in grades four and five experience many opportunities to become more independent and responsible for their own learning. Christ Methodist provides transitions during these years to prepare the boys and girls for middle school. In fourth grade, students are taught all core subjects, except science and social studies, by their homeroom teachers. Twice a week, the students change classes for those two subjects.
Fifth graders have a departmentalized learning environment in which one teacher specializes in language arts and her partner, in math and science. In addition to their core subjects, students rotate through Encore classes, which are taught by specialized teachers in the areas of art, Bible, computer, library, music, physical education, Spanish, and science lab. Several out-of-town field trips are included in the upper school curriculum, as well.
Each grade level at CMDS has its own set of unique traditions and learning experiences. Fourth graders look forward to displaying their impressive research projects, as well as performing for their families and fellow students, at the annual "State Fair," a perfect finale to their year-long study of the five regions of the United States. Fifth graders connect the dots between what they have been learning in class and the real world, through role-playing during their day-long visit to BizTown!, a fully-interactive simulated town facility. Students always have fond memories of these events.
